Home Security FAQs
Is an alarm system only for prevention of break and enters?
Absolutely not! With the proper components, your system can alert you to rising water levels in your basement, a sudden drop in the temperature in your home, dangerous carbon monoxide levels or possible fire - all of which can happen when you are not home. AAA Alarms is there 24/7, monitoring the safety of your home and your loved ones.
What if I subscribe to an alternative phone service?
There is a possibility that we may not be able to monitor your security system. It is important that you contact us before you change your existing phone provider to verify if it will affect your security system.
I don't have a landline in my home as I use my cell; can I still have a monitored security system?
Yes! You will need to install a GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) transmitter unit that will transmit the alarm signals over the GSM network to the AAA Alarm monitoring centre.
What if my phone line is compromised?
Most alarm systems use traditional telephone lines (or land lines) to transmit signals to monitoring centres. AAA Alarms recommends having a wireless backup connection installed with your alarm system. If your telephone line is compromised, the signal from your alarm can be carried by either a radio or cellular signal to the AAA monitoring centre.
If there is a problem with my alarm system, can you turn it off from the AAA monitoring centre?
No. Your security system is an independent unit and can only be turned off from your keypad or control panel.
Can I get a discount on my homeowner's insurance by installing a monitored security system?
Yes. Your AAA home security system may save you up to 15% on your homeowners' insurance. Ask your insurance agent for details.
If my power goes out, will my alarm system still work?
Yes. Your alarm control panel is equipped with a back-up battery that will maintain your security system for several hours. The panel also supervises the battery so in the event your battery is extremely low, a signal will be sent to the monitoring centre so that we may contact you to let you know the system will soon need a new battery.
How often should I change my battery and where do I purchase one?
Batteries will typically last between 3 to 5 years depending on its usage. AAA Alarms carries almost all types of batteries required for the alarm systems we service. You can either call for an appointment to have one of our service technicians install a new battery (a service charge will apply) or visit one of our branches to purchase it directly. We recommend replacing your battery every 3 years.
Am I responsible for testing my security system? How often?
Yes. It is important to test your system on a regular basis; our recommendation is once a month or at the minimum once every three months. Call the monitoring centre with your System ID and password before running your test and afterwards to confirm your test was a success. Instructions on testing your system are found in your complete user guide or call the AAA Customer Care department.
